Hey lovely people!
Today I want to share some photos with you from the stunning walled city of Mont Saint Michel.
This medieval city is a charm found in the northern part of France. A castle-like Monastery sits on top of the rocky mountain making it a mesmerizing sight. Guarded by a fortress wall, the city becomes an island when the tide is high. Mont Saint Michel is an absolutely magical place. In fact it was the inspiration for the Minas Tirith in Lord of the Rings as well as the castle in the Disney film tangled.
We stayed a little bit outside of Mont Saint Michel and had a little less then a day to spend exploring the city. Even though there is a shuttle that runs every half hour, our hotel host recommended walking to the island by foot and staying there for the evening. We took her advice and I'm so glad we did because it was one of the most memorable nights of my life! The island was about two miles away from our hotel so we set off a little before sunset. The walk was magical! The monastery on the horizon, the setting sun, the exposed ocean floor, the sheep grazing on the green pastures, the ocean breeze...
We arrived to the city walls right as the sun went down and most of the tourists were already heading back to mainland. As we entered the fortress walls we were in complete awe. It was like walking out of a time travel machine into another era. The wind howled through the narrow alleyways and we started our climb up the many many stairs to the top. As we got higher we looked out onto the ocean floor that was exposed as far as the eye could see. The light was fading fast, the lanterns were slowly turning on, and the wind was picking up making the atmosphere even more enchanting. By the time we got to the top and to the foot of the monastery we felt like we were the only ones in the whole city. Looking out beyond the fortress walls all you could see was the black of the night and a clear sky full of stars. I can't even put the moment into words, it was out of this world.
After spending some time appreciating the magical moment, we started heading back down the stairways to explore some more. At this point we were literally some of the only people roaming the narrow streets and it was so awesome to experience the place without the crowds. We wandered the tiny streets, spent some time in candle filled chapels, and admired everything we laid our eyes on. By time we started heading back we realized we missed the last shuttle out. Instead of walking back to our hotel right away we took a couple steps back, sat on the concrete, and admired the mountain sparkling with lights and the sky filling up with stars. We sat there until they slowly started turning the lights off in the city and then started making the long way back.
As we got further away from the island, we were walking in pitch darkness with the only light being the stars and the small guiding lights on the bridge. It was awesome!
The next morning we decided to walk to Mont Saint Michel again to explore it in the daytime and to see the monastery from the inside. It was all so beautiful. We couldn't help but think of how much else is hidden in the passageways under the castle and how amazing it would be to explore it all one day. We watched the tide slowly coming in and then we had to make our way back via shuttle to catch a bus out to our next destination.
Seeing Mont Saint Michel and being to experience it's eerily magical atmosphere at night was one of the highlights of all of our travels this summer. It was an incredible place and experience that I will never forget. I hope to go back one day! If you plan on visiting France, you HAVE to go to Mont Saint Michel! :)
